American Autodueling Enthuisiasts

Well, no. Not yet. I'm just getting started on planning the Town Squares ('cause I can't call 'em City Blocks, SJGames got there first). What follows are my musings and ramblings on the subject. Please feel free to make suggestions, corrections, demands, or whatever.

I plan to hold to the 8" by 8" format for the map tiles, but I'm wondering about the spaces in between. Streets, obviously, but how wide? Two lanes? Three? Allow for both options? And if I correctly understand how the pieces would go together, then intersection tiles would be necessary, too.

Come to think of it, the streets don't always have to be streets. How about a piece that connects two of the big tiles together? It could have a smallish building or two (houses? small businesses?) or even just parking space or an empty lot.

I was worried about putting any kind of text on the tiles. I didn't know exactly how Vassal "flips" maps. Turns out it does a 180º rotation. This means that text could be OK, if I make it vertical instead of horizontal. Wouldn't want too much text cluttering things up though.

I think the most important bit to this planning stage is to sort out in my head how the edges of pieces line up with each other. Don't want the sidewalks jumping around, if you take my meaning. Also, I should do a test of driving a tractor-trailer around a corner, and make note of how much that corner needs to be rounded off.

Most of all, I am very much open to recommendations as to what kind of buildings, businesses and other features to include. Sock it to me.
